About VetPDA-Rx

VetPDA-Rx is a veterinary drug formulary designed for use on Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and based on information proviced by the Faculty of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. It was originally designed to provide students, staff, and faculty at UC Davis with an up to date, easily accessible, pharmaceutical reference for use within the VMTH.

Viewer Design
Much effort has gone into viewer design. We wanted it to be as customizable as possible to ensure the best possible user experience. Users can select which headings and species specific dosing information is available. You can also select which category of drugs the system displays when it loads and which heading appears first when you view a drug.

Categories
Each of the drugs has been categorized based on the American Hospital Formulary System (AHFS). This system permits the inclusion of a drug into multiple categories. (eg. Lidocaine is categoriezed as both a local anesthetic and as a cardiovascular drug.) At the same time, however, we have attempted to categorize drugs based on their primary use. (eg Ophthalmic formulations of antibiotics categorized as EENT/Antibiotics as opposed to just within Antibiotics).

Navigation
The user has several options for finding information on a specific drug. The first option is to simply scroll through the list. The second option is to use the QuickFind selection box. As the user taps in letters, the list of drugs scrolls to the first drug matching the specified criteria. Once the characters entered uniquely identify a drug, it is highlighted to alert the user. The third method is to search based on synonyms and trade names. All drugs are listed based on their proper, generic name to encourage students to learn those names. The last method for finding a specific drug is to use category and sub-category filtering. Click here to see a demonstration of this feature.

Interactions & Incompatibilities
The viewer has the ability to check for interactions and incompatibilities based on either drug-drug or drug-category interactions. The authors have tried to focus on the commonly seen, clinically relevant interactions. Click here for a demonstration.

User Notes
It is very likely that the user will want to add his or her own notes to a specific drug entry. VetPDA-Rx includes a persistent notes feature which provides this functionality. When the user updates the database, the notes are not affected.
