Spay Day 2009

Spay Day History

Spay Day USA was established in 1995 by the Doris Day Animal Foundation. Since then, more than 1 million cats, dogs, and other animals have been spayed or neutered.

In 2004, more than 800 volunteers from around Sacramento (veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants and animal welfare advocates) collaborated to spay and neuter 900 companion animals (385 dogs and 515 cats). Animals were assigned to one of twenty-six different Spay/Neuter locations in the Sacramento area by the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition.

About 1/2 of the volunteers involved were from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and included 185 veterinary students, 40 faculty members, 35 VMTH residents, 85 SVM and VMTH staff members, and 30 others. Thanks to the hard work of all of these people, we performed almost 1/3 of the total spays and neuters.

2005 saw an additional 280 animals spayed or neutered at UC Davis due to the help of over 500 volunteers.

For 2006 and 2007, we dropped the number of available slots to 120 and perfomed roughly 100 spay and neuter surgeries.
