Where will Spay Day be held?

Spay Day will be held in the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center. It is located just west of the VMTH on Garrod Drive.

Where do I park?

We're trying to keep as many parking spaces close to the Gourley building as possible for clients with their animals. Please park in log 57 (the new lot north west of Gourley on West Health Science Drive

What is the goal for the UC Davis location for Spay Day

We will have 75 slots for dogs to be dropped off on Saturday with all surgeries performed on Sunday.

Only dogs? Why no cats?

There are several reasons we're only doing dogs this year

• Logistically, it's much easier to not have separate exam rooms, scales, and staff for dogs & cats
• Other locations prefer to do cats
• The only injuries in previous years were caused by cats

What's in it for the Animals?

Each animal scheduled for a Spay Day appointment will receive:

• Physical Exam
• Any needed vaccinations
• Microchip with lifetime registration
• Spay or neuter surgery

Who is eligible to volunteer?

To volunteer for Spay Day, you must meet all of the following criteria:

• Any UC Davis employee, SVM student, or VetAide club member
• Willing to sign a waiver of liability

What type of time committment is involved?

There will essentially be 3 shifts: Saturday Afternoon, Sunday Morning, and Sunday afternoon. When you register, you'll be able to select which of those shifts you're available for (and how many TOTAL shifts you're willing to work).

As a rough guide the Saturday shift is 3 - 7 pm, Sunday morning 8 - 12 pm and afternoon 1 - 4 pm with clean up volunteers 3 - 5 pm. There will be slight variations based on the role you're in. For example, anesthesia and surgery techs will start earlier on Sunday than the receptionists.

Note: for those volunteers in the "Guardian" role, we're really hoping that you'll be willing to work concurrent shifts to provide continuity of care for a given animal.

We're still working out the details regarding how many people we'll need for each of the roles and for each of the shifts.

But I have clinic responsibilities...

We appreciate the commitments of clinical rotations -- please include which rotation you'll be on in the 'Additional Experience' section of the registration form. We will attempt to work each of the services and confirm shifts with you.

Please indicate which shifts you would like to be considered for pending clinical obligations.

Will 3rd and 4th year students be allowed to do any part of the spays or neuters?

The goal of spay day is to provide a service to the community and the challenge is to spay and neuter a large number of animals safely and efficiently. Unlike most student and clinician interactions, where one of our main goals is to teach, in the interest of time students will not be performing any of the surgical procedures on spay day. Students will however, provide an important role as surgical assistants, allowing for the clinican to perform the surgeries faster and get through more cases. We appreciate everyones help on this day as it is a very important cause.

What will I be doing if I volunteer?

It depends on what skills you have... and how you're affiliated with the Vet School.

Undergraduates will not be able to act as guardians this year but there are a number of other jobs for them.
