Setting up and Using Moobilenet

Setting up your Laptop / PDA

In order to take advantage of Moobilenet, you'll need to register the hardware ethernet address otherwise known as a MAC Address of the device you're trying to use. A MAC address is a 12 digit string, usually in the format ##-##-##-##-##-##. The MAC address is also known as the Hardware Ethernet Address.

For instructions on locating your MAC address, please visit one of the following websites:

Macintosh OS X - http://xbase.ucdavis.edu/itexpress/article.cfm?art=918
Windows XP - http://xbase.ucdavis.edu/itexpress/article.cfm?art=925
Windows 2000 - http://xbase.ucdavis.edu/itexpress/article.cfm?art=311
PDAs – http://vetpda.ucdavis.edu/FAQ.cfm#12

To register your MAC address, go to the Computing Account Services website (http://computingaccounts.ucdavis.edu). Select 'Ethernet (NIC) card registration' from the main menu, type in the information requested, then select 'Register a Computer for DHCP', click Continue and carefully type in the MAC address from the device you want to use on Moobilenet . If you're trying to register a laptop, please make sure you're using the MAC address for the Wireless Network Adapter (PC) or Airport (Macintosh).

After registration you should be able to use the wireless network within 5 minutes.

If you have Windows XP, you need to Enable ping for Windows Firewall

This uniform configuration for UCD Wireless will also work in all other Moobilenet locations around campus including the libraries and the MU.

If you have difficulty with this process, please call 2-8953 or visit the VMTH Annex Room 101.

Using your Laptop / PDA

When you are in an area that has coverage, your laptop or PDA may ask you about the wireless network (also called an SSID). If you are asked to choose a network name or SSID, choose "Moobilenet". On some PDAs you will be asked if you would like to connect to "Work" or "The Internet" if these are your choices pick "The Internet".

Once you are connected to Moobilenet, the next thing you'll need to do is to authenticate yourself. To do this, open a Web browser and enter the URL: http://www-wls.ucdavis.edu. Click on the 'Logon Here' image and submit your Kerberos username and password. We suggest setting this page as a bookmark (or favorite) on your device to speed up this process. After you have received a message indicating that you have been 'authenticated on the wireless network', you are free to log on to VMACS, visit the rest of the web, check email, etc.
